Type: Lidded Jar
Material: Ceramic Pottery
Age: Meiji Period (1868-1912) or newer (early 1900s)
Origin/Maker: Kyoto Satsuma ware, Awata, Kyoto, Japan. Unsigned. Marks on underside of lid and top of jar where lid rests, but probably not maker marks, probably marks identifying the pieces as matching in order to assist the decorators
Size: 5.1" diameter (13.2 cm), 5 1/2" tall (13.97 cm)
Weight: 1 lb 5.5 oz (609 g)
Provenance:
Present: Ryan Snooks collection of Japanese & Asian Decorative Art
Previous: Private Collection
Collected: Vendor at Long Beach Flea Market, Long Beach, CA 30 JUN 2024
Condition: Item is used in good condition commensurate with age, see photos. Small crack to lid and to top of bottom piece, presumably original to manufacture because they're in matching spots, they are decorated over, and they appear to be splits due to firing (not damage). Some light surface wear.
Subject: Lidded jar painted on red background with designs of a sparrow, white plum or cherry blossoms (I believe plum based on the rounded petals), and white and yellow flowers (I should know the name of these flowers but I don't; they're fairly common in Japanese art). Lid of jar in design of of an upside down tangerine (mikan) or persimmon (kaki)
