See also:
Type: Garden Lantern (Toro) for hanging or resting on a surface
Material: Bronze Metal
Age: Meiji Period (1868-1912)
Origin/Maker: Japan
Size: 10" tall (to top stem loop on lid)
Weight: 3 lb 11 oz (1676 g)
Provenance:
Collected: San Diego CA antique store MAY 2023
Condition: Item is used in good condition commensurate with age, see photos. Some corrosion. The bottom of the door isn't aligned quite right with the bottom of the lantern, but it locks and opens without issue. The lid has several additional holes that are unused (suspect some of these may have been used to secure the lid to the basket using chains or wire - as is the lid is loosely attached and the lantern can't be supported by the chain without the bottom piece separating - sitting the lantern on the ground or table would be fine).
Subject: Delicately cast in the design of a bamboo ikebana basket, with a lotus leaf top (the stem of the lotus is the top loop). An unusual masterful design, and one of the finest metal lanterns I've seen.
