Condition: Item is used in poor condition commensurate with age, see photos. Lots of chips along the edges and surface wear.
Subject: Design of an iron and wood rice measure box (masu), with a gold coin (koban or ryō) sitting on top. Maybe based on the idea that "One ryō was also considered equivalent to 1 koku of rice, or the amount of rice needed to feed one person for one year"
