Chin Jukan (Jukan zo, Jukan sei, Gyokuzan zo) occurs under many signatures. Most important was Chin Jukan XII (1835-1906) who was the founding father of the satsuma industry in Kagoshima, Satsuma province. He exhibited at many international exhibitions during the years 1873-1906. The factory produced blanks for Satsuma decorators across Japan, notably Yabu Meizan and Gyokushu. Chin also used the name Gyokuzan between 1874-1897. Other artists are Chin Jukan XIV (1926-), (Satsuma Jukan sei) and Chin Jukan XV (1959-)

Subject: Painted Imperial Satsuma (Gosu Blue Satsuma ware) style designs of Heian era (794–1185; when Kyoto was the capital of Japan) court scenes from the The Tale of Genji (源氏物語) of various royals and officials across six panels. Note the squares of a different color of gold, resembling designs on screens using gold leaf. Three of the six panels around the upper shoulder of the jar depict a biwa (a musical instrument), a table with two hats (one woven, the other belonging to an official), and a table with flowers. The other panels depict a chrysanthemum flower (kiku) and flower patterns. Three panels on the lid depict the same kiku patterns, and the other three panels depict patterns related to the Heian era incense competition, kō-awase (香合わせ), the most well-known example of which was an incense competition from The Tale of Genji. In the chapter ‘A Branch of Plum’ (Umegae), Genji, the ‘Shining Prince’, has created blends that everyone agrees are superior
