Origin/Maker: Kyoto ware, Japan. Maker's mark on reverse (not a mark included in the book "Adornment in Clay"). Judging by the decorations on the front and the blue glaze on the back, this is some kind of Awata or Kiyomizu ware, possibly Kyo-Satsuma ware. This blue green glaze was used frequently with Ko-Kiyomizu ware and old Awata ware, but was carried over into Kyoto Satsuma ware as well.
Size: 1.5" tall (3.7 cm), 1.1" wide (2.9 cm)

Condition: Fair condition commensurate with age, see photos. Surface wear, several chips around base of mask, most notably the left ear is partially missing.
Subject: Old Kyoto ware ceramic Hannya mask netsuke. Hannya is a kind of Oni (Ogre / Demon / Devil) yokai, created from a anger of a vengeful woman.
