Satsuma Lidded Jar
Arhats & Attendants
Attributed to Makuzu Kozan

Type: Lidded Jar
Material: Ceramic Pottery
Age: Meiji Period (1868 - 1912)
Origin/Maker: Makuzu Kozan I 宮川香山, in the style of Satsuma ware. Unmarked, but Makuzu's early works were in the style of Satsuma ware and often unmarked. I've identified a different very similarly decorated jar marked マクス (Makuzu), the same mark as on this vase in my collection. In addition, this jar contains many of his common design features (for example, the golden clouds, the pattern around the base and outside of the lid, the form of the foot and base, and his vivid glazes).
Size: 7" tall (17.78 cm)
Weight: 2 lb 0.6 oz (923 g)
Provenance: Gray's Auctioneers, Cleveland, OH, USA
Collected: 12 MAY 2021
Condition: Item is used in good condition commensurate with age, see photos. Small chip to underside of lid. Several tiny chips to upper rim. Small hairline crack to upper rim. Original to manufacture hairline cracks to base. Some wear to painted design.
Subject: Decorated with finely painted and brilliantly glazed Satsuma style designs of the sixteen rakan arhats, the highest disciples of the Buddha. They are joined by a white tiger, birds, blue green ShiShi Foo Lion, dragons, deer, rabbits, ducks, attendants, pine trees, and flowers. The lid is decorated with the triple hollyhock mon of the Tokugawa Shogunate.
