Type: Plate
Material: Porcelain
Age: Meiji Period (1868-1912)
Origin/Maker: Marked 五最堂 (Gosaido). I would assume Yokohama export porcelain by a Kutani decorator, but I checked my Yokohama porcelain book and couldn't find any marks starting with 五 (Go (5)). So possibly also Seto (Nagoya) porcelain, Kutani (Kanazawa), or Kobe. as this style was made in several areas during the Meiji Period in Japan. Maker's mark on base of 五最堂.
Size: 8 5/8" diameter (21.9075 cm)
Weight: 10.5 oz (299 g)
Provenance:
Present: Ryan Snooks collection of Japanese & Asian Decorative Art
Previous: Private Collection
Collected: Vendor at Long Beach Flea Market, Long Beach, CA 30 JUN 2024
Condition: Item is used in good condition commensurate with age, see photos. No cracks or chips. Some light surface wear.
Subject: Painted with detailed samurai era scene of two men preparing a wooden box, while one woman looks on, another woman attends to a large fish (red snapper (tai)) on a platter, and a boy carries another platter. They look to be preparing a feast.
Note that I have four plates in this series, two smaller (7 1/4" diameter) and two larger (8 5/8"), each with different designs that seem to be showing preparations for a wedding feast or a similar ceremonial meal.
