Description
A POLYCHROME WOOD NETSUKE OF A NOH DANCER, ATTRIBUTED TO TOEN
Unsigned, attributed to Morikawa Toen (1820 – 1894)
Japan, 19th century
Well carved as a Noh dancer standing, wearing a voluminous robe finely painted in polychrome pigments. She holds a fan in her right hand, while the other hand is concealed beneath the broad sleeves. The back of the robe with asymmetrical himotoshi.
HEIGHT 5.6 cm
Condition: Good condition with wear, rubbing to pigments, and small flakes to the paint to the bottom.
Morikawa Toen (1820 - 1894) from Nara was a carver of dolls (Nara-ningyo), okimono, netsuke and masks. The special features of the Nara-ningyo are its angular, cubistic-looking form and the splendid painting. The most common subjects are Jo and Uba, actors, historical figures and tea pickers. Toen produced a great variety of No actor netsuke, which were often imitated.
