Subject: A jizai kagi was a large wooden hook used to lower a kettle or cooking pot into a sunken hearth in an old traditional Japanese home. They were seen as symbols of hospitality (the bigger the better!) and are a modern day symbol of Mingei (unknown craftsman folk arts) and wabi-sabi. One interesting feature of this particular hook is a patch of natural uncarved wood, showing the bark of the tree that was used.
