Origin/Maker: Nishiura Enji (西浦), Mino ware, Tajimi, Japan. Maker's mark on base 西浦大改 (Nishiura Daikai). An earlier piece of his, more in the Seto / Yokohama / Kutani style than the Chinese porcelain style he became famous for.
The Handbook of Japan and Japanese exhibits at World's fair, St. Louis, 1904, has the following information: "The porcelains manufactured by us are sold by the Tajima & Co., Boston, Chicago, Yokohama, Kobe, Nagoya, Japan, etc., being well known under the name of Nishiura Yaki. The output of porcelain in 1901 was valued at 6,935,176 ¥, of which 2,491,668 ¥ constituted the export. Nagoya produced one-third of the total. Gifu, Kyoto, Kanazawa and Kagoshima are the principal localities where the goods are manufactured".

Nishiura Enji
A wealthy merchant and potter from Tajimi, Toki County, Mino Province (Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture).
His grandfather Kato (Nishiura) Enji acquired the business rights to four kilns in Oi, Ena County (Oi-cho, Ena City) during the Bunsei era (1818-1830), and was appointed director of Mino Pottery, where he worked hard to improve the reputation of Mino ware.
In 1911, the factory closed. Pieces are inscribed with names such as "Nishiura", "Made by Nishiura", "Made by Nishiura Weave Worker Kato Gosuke", "Nishiura ware", and "Made by Nishiura Pottery Shop".
Many Nishiura ware items were exported to Europe and the United States.

西浦圓治
美濃国土岐郡多治見(岐阜県多治見市)多治見の豪商、陶家。
祖父加藤(西浦)圓治は文政(1818~1830)恵那郡大井(恵那市大井町)の四つの窯の営業権を譲り受け、美濃窯元取締役を命ぜられ美濃焼の名声向上に大変尽力する。
明治四十四年、工場閉鎖。作品には「西浦」、「西浦造」、「西浦組織工加藤五輔造」、「西浦焼」「西浦陶器店製」等の銘が記されている。
西浦焼の多くは欧米に輸出された品が多い。

Condition: Item is used in poor condition commensurate with age, see photos. Some surface wear with chips to enamel painted design Spiderwebbing hairline cracks in center. Remnants of "494" written in red pen above the bird. Some tiny chips and rough spots to underside of foot, all likely original to manufacture
Subject: Mino ware plate by the esteemed Nishiura Enji, in Kutani porcelain style design of a bird flying above lotus flowers on a blue pond. The plate is lotus leaf shaped (with the veins of the leaf visible from the top)), with a detailed sculpted lotus stem forming the foot of the dish (unusual sculptural decorations like this are a feature of old Seto porcelain)
