Type: Teapot (Kyusu)
Material: Ceramic Pottery
Age: 20th C. (1900s)
Origin/Maker: Style of Kawai Kanjiro 河井 寬次郎, Kyoto, Japan. Unsigned (typical for Kawai Kanjiro, Kawai Hirotsugu, and Kawai Takeichi). I think likely by Kawai Kanjro, but I haven't found a close enough example to say that it's definitely by him (he didn't make a lot of teapots; see below for teapot examples by him for comparison, and some other non-teapot pieces with similar designs)
Size: 5 3/8" tall (to top of lid; 13.6525 cm), 7 1/2" tall (to top of handle; 19.05 cm)
Weight: 1 lb 11.9 oz (790 g)
Provenance:
Present: Ryan Snooks collection of Japanese & Asian Decorative Art
Previous: Private Collection
Collected: Seller from Los Gatos, CA, 11 APR 2025. Seller had the following description: "VIntage Japanese Stoneware Mashiko Teapot (T97) - Vintage Japanese stoneware teapot with bamboo handle. The teapot is hand glazed and has a crackling effect. This teapot has never been used. It is new old stock. It was imported from Japan in the 1980's. There are no markings on the bottom. Measurement: 6 1/2 inches at the widest X 5 1/2 inches tall."
Condition: Item is used in good condition commensurate with age, see photos. Crazing and staining around top of teapot (the staining seems to be from pine resin (I was able to scrape some off and it smells like pine sap)). Original to manufacture surface S-Crack on base. Partial crack to bamboo handle
Subject: Kawai Kanjiro style teapot, with designs of the Buddhist Wheel (dharmachakra), done similarly to his typical flower / grass designs, glazed in brown, cinnabar red, and gosu blue on the sides, over a white ceramic base, with a light blue glaze covering the piece.
