Kinkozan Butterflies Sugar Bowl

Type: Sugar Bowl or Tea Caddy Lidded Container
Material: Stoneware Ceramic Pottery (not porcelain; Satsuma wares are not made from porcelain).
Age: Late Meiji Period (early 20th Century, early 1900s).
Origin/Maker: Japanese, Kyoto Satsuma (Kyo-Satsuma), marked Kinkozan in red paint. Kinkozan made Kyo-Satsuma wares in several distinct styles, including this Ko-Kiyomizu inspired Awata Satsuma style. In this style of wares they usually signed in red or gold somewhere on the side of the piece instead of on the bottom. They also made Art Deco and Studio Porcelain inspired pieces, and highly detailed Kagoshima Satsuma styled pieces.

Condition: Item is used in good condition commensurate with age. No cracks. Several small chips, possibly original to manufacture, two on the foot, one at the top rim next to where the lid rests, and one on the underside of the lid. Surface craquelure, as is normal for Satsuma wares.
Subject: Painted butterflies (25 in total). Handles in the shape of bamboo stalks.
