Type: Large Teapot (Dobin)
Material: Ceramic Pottery
Age: Meiji Period (1868 - 1912)
Origin/Maker: Glazed and painted decorations appear to be Kiyomizu style Satsuma ware from Kyoto, Japan, but the teapot body / blank appears to be a match for the same as the old teapots made in Mashiko and decorated with sansui landscape (山水画) designs (most famously by Minagawa Masu, who was an inspiration for the Hamada Shoji and the Mingei movement).
Size: 6 3/8" tall (16.192 cm)
Weight: 1 lb 5.9 oz (621 g)
Provenance: Santa Monica CA antique store
Collected: 22JAN2023
Condition: Item is used in fair condition commensurate with age, see photos. Small chips to underside of lid, possibly original to manufacture. Small chips to top rim where lid sits. Chips to end of spot. Some wear to painted design. Missing original woven handle, only a small wire handle remains
Subject: Decorated with painted and glazed designs of peony flowers (botan), chrysanthemum flowers (kiku), and cherry blossoms (sakura) or plum blossoms (ume). Note the use of dark gosu blue on one peony, and the teal blue green on the handle loops, characteristic of Kyoto Ko-Kiyomizu ware and Satsuma ware.
