Collected: San Diego, CA antique store, 26 DEC 2024
Condition: Item is used in good condition commensurate with age, see photos. Some light surface wear. Original to manufacture stilt marks to base
Subject: Rare Awaji post-war "Occupied Japan" piece. The general belief is that all Awaji potteries closed in 1939, marking that as the end point for decorative Awaji ware, but the Danto kiln is known to have resumed producing utilitarian ceramic tiles after WWII. But this plate is evidence that they did still produce some Awaji ware decorative pottery after the war, albeit apparently in very limited amounts (as this is the only example I know of - though admittedly there is not a lot of knowledge regarding Awaji ware). Glazed in typical Awaji green with a white running horse design.
