Subject: Yurei (Japanese vengeful ghost). Features of Yurei include pained facial expression, long unkempt hair, downward pointing hands, no visible feet, ragged clothing, and flames.
This is a netsuke of a Yūrei, or ghost, carved from sea shell (some might say mother of pearl, even though this example isn't iridescent). Again, the carving quality isn't so great, so I wouldn't be suprised if it was a modern carving. Measures 2.72" tall. Has the typical Yūrei features of long disheveled hair, no legs or feet (floating), and outstretched arms with lifeless, dangling hands.
