Kaneshige Tōyō 金重陶陽
1896-1967
Living National Treasure 人間国宝 1956

Born into the Kaneshige family, one of the six kilns of Bizen, as the son of wakigama-style potter Kaneshige Baiyo, Toyo was trained by his father from early childhood and became adept at pottery techniques, with handicrafts and engraved ornaments being his particular specialty. He further devoted himself to the study of kiln construction. In 1921, he built a German-style map kiln, allowing him to successfully fire kiln-effect pottery (yohen-mono). He went on to study pottery clay as well, successfully recreating the sheen of Momoyama-period Bizen pottery in 1930. In 1939, he also succeeded in firing scarlet-stroke (hidasuki) kiln-effect pottery. In this way, he devoted himself to the restoration of traditional Bizen pottery and became the founder of modern Bizen pottery.
Also in this period, he held his first solo exhibition in 1936; founded the “Karahine Society” together with Arakawa Toyozo, Miwa Kyuwa, and Kawakita Handeishi in 1942; was certified as an Authorized Preserver of a Craft also in 1942; was selected as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in 1952; founded the Tori Society in Tori, Izusan, together with Ishiguro Munemaro, Kato Hajime, Arakawa Toyozo, and Kato Tokuro in 1954; and was certified as an Important Intangible Cultural Heritage (Living National Treasure) for his Bizen pottery in 1956.

Fujiwara Kei 藤原啓

Starting out with a passion for literatary studies, Fujiwara began submitting haiku and poems throughout his elementary and junior high school years to various publications and winning awards for some of his submissions. Leaving for Tokyo at the age of 19, he began working as an editor for Hakubunkan while also attending university and was producing poems under the pen name Fujiwara Keiji. However, due to poor health, he abandoned his aspirations of becoming a writer of literature and returned to his hometown in 1973.
After returning home, Fujiwara began to practice pottery at the suggestion of Manyoshu scholar Masamune Atsuo, going on to become the apprentice of Bizen potter Mimura Umekage.
Getting his first kiln in 1939, Fujiwara then started out on his own, and thanks to the guidance of Kanashige Toyo as well as deepening his understanding of the unique ko-bizen style of pottery, he developed works in the solemn style of Momoyama and Kamamura period ceramics. After the war he was recognized as a conservator of bizen ware techniques in 1948, was designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property by Okayama Prefecture in 1954, became a regular member of the Japan Kogei Association in 1956, and in 1970 became the second person to be designated a Living National Treasure for bizen ware pottery after Kanashige Toyo.
In addition to this, he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun 4th Class in 1972, received the Miki Memorial Award from Okayama Prefecture in 1973, and was also awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure 3rd Class on the day of his death in 1983.

Fujiwara Yu 藤原雄

Born as the eldest son of Living National Treasure for bizen ware Fujiwara Kei, after graduating from university, Fujiwara worked for a time as a magazine editor, but was convinced by his father and Oyama Fujio to return home where he began his tutelage in ceramics under his father.
After this, Fujiwara went on to produce work after work, presenting them in exhibitions by Japan kogei association, the Gendai Nihon Togei, and the Issuikai, eventually becoming a member of the latter in 1960, and becoming a regular member of Japan kogei association the following year.
Fujiwara won the grand prix prize in the Barcelona International Pottery Exhibit, which then gained him attention in the United States, Canada, Spain and various other countries in 1964 when he was asked to instruct in pottery around the world as a visiting lecturer.
Fujiwara opened his own workshop in Honami, Bizen in 1967, and after starting to work independently, won the Nihon Toji Kyokaisho award, thereupon going on to win the Kanashige Toyo award in 1973 and being recognised as an Important Intangible Cultural Property by Okayama Prefecture in 1978. In 1984, he won the Sanyo Newspaper Award, was awarded the Medal of Honor with a dark blue ribbon by the Japanese Government and won the Okayama-ken Bunkasho Award both in 1985, the Chugoku Bunkasho Award in 1986, the Okanichi Geijutsu Bunka Korosho Award in 1987, and the Geijutsu Sensho Monbu Taijinsho Award in 1990. With such a prestigious history of awards behind him, Fujiwara became the 4th person to be designated a Living National Treasure for bizen ware in 1996 after Toyo, Kei, and Yamamoto Toshu, and was also awarded the Medal of Honor with purple ribbon by the Government of Japan in 1998.
Striving to create ceramics that placed an importance of usability that would be suitable as both tea bowls and for dining while also working to bring out the uniquely quiet and subdued simplicity of the works of bizen ware to the utmost, Fujiwara’s works serve as the basis of modern bizen wares that place an emphasis on both usability and beauty.

Konishi Toko 1st 初代小西陶古
1899 - 1954

He established the Toko kiln which was the original kiln for Bizen-ware, and originated ‘Sangiri’ that goes through artificial color variations through firing using heated charcoal. This brought about great reforms in Bizen-ware.
There remain his masterpieces in the replicas of ancient Bizen-ware, and he was especially good at ornaments such as small teapots, lions, and Hotei (God of contentment).
Since then, the Toko kiln has been inherited by the second generation Konishi Toko, Konishi Tozo.

Nakamura Rokuro 中村六郎
1914-2004

Born in Imbe. His father made a fortune in business and was a close patron of artists such as Kaneshige Toyo. As a result, he was exposed to Bizen ware from an early age. Under the influence of that time, he aspired to become a potter. He worked for a company until the end of the war and studied under Living National Treasure Kaneshige Toyo from 1945. When Kitaoji Rosanjin visited Kaneshige Toyo’s home, he learned his techniques together with Fujiwara Kei, Yamamoto Toshu and others. Became independent in 1961. Awarded a prize at the Japan Traditional Craft Exhibition. He is a master craftsman known as “Rokuro of Tokkuri” because He is a master sake vessel maker. Nakamura Rokuro is known not only in Bizen ware circles but also throughout the country as Nakamura Rokuro when it comes to sake ware. 宮城県出身。地元高校を卒業後、専門学校を経ていったんは就職。しかし、備前焼のモノトーンの感じ、地味さなどが自分の感覚にマッチし、備前焼作家を志す。一九七四(昭和四十九)年に伊勢崎満に弟子入りし、四年間陶技を基礎から学ぶ。七八年に登り窯を築いて独立。食器、花器をよく手掛け、機能的で使いやすく、自然な仕上がりが持ち味。成形はろくろ主体だが、作品に合わせて型抜きの技法なども積極的に取り入れる。創作にあたっては、十分に時間をかけて、ゆったり楽しく作陶することを心掛ける。今後は、使う人に「良かった」と思ってもらえるような作品を作ることが目標。八三年から隔年で仙台の百貨店で個展。陶印は名前の「久」。
Born in Miyagi Prefecture. After graduating from a local high school, he went to a vocational school and then got a job. However, the monochrome feel and plainness of Bizen ware matched his own sensibilities, and he aspired to become a Bizen ware artist. In 1974, he became an apprentice to Mitsuru Isesaki and learned pottery from the basics for four years. In 1978, he built a climbing kiln and became independent.
He often creates tableware and flower vases, which are functional, easy to use, and have a natural finish. His molding is mainly done on a potter's wheel, but he also actively incorporates techniques such as die-cutting to suit his works. When it comes to his creations, he takes plenty of time to create pottery in a leisurely and enjoyable manner. From now on, my goal is to create products that will make the people who use them think, ``That's great!''
Since 1983, he has held solo exhibitions every other year at a department store in Sendai. His ceramic seal is his name "Hisashi".

北海道の高校を卒業し公務員をしていたが、備前焼特有の土肌や色調にひかれ、職を辞して備前へ。一九八一(昭和五十六)年から九年間、窯元陶正園で修業。九○(平成二)年に築窯して独立。翌年、岡山で初窯展を開催。皿、小鉢、急須などの食器、大型の甕、傘立て、花器、茶器、酒器のほか、レリーフやオブジェなども手掛ける。食器は使いやすさとデザイン性を考え、花器はオリジナリティーを追う。陶土に応じた成形と焼成を重視し、独自性の高い物作りを心掛ける。今後は器肌の処理方法を探求したいという。札幌、神戸など各地で個展。九六年、新見の河川公園にレリーフを制作。二〇一三年、特殊器台復刻プロジェクトに参加。陶印はイニシャルの「K」をデザイン。

After graduating from a high school in Hokkaido, he worked as a civil servant, but was drawn to the unique texture and color tone of Bizen ware, so he quit his job and moved to Bizen. For nine years starting in 1981, he trained at the pottery Toshoen. Built a kiln in 1990 (Heisei 2) and became independent. The following year, his first kiln exhibition was held in Okayama.

He creates tableware such as plates, small bowls, and teapots, large jars, umbrella stands, flower vases, tea utensils, and sake utensils, as well as his own reliefs and objects. When it comes to tableware, he considers ease of use and design, and when it comes to vases, he pursues his originality. He places emphasis on shaping and firing, depending on the clay, and strives to create highly unique products. In the future, he says he would like to explore methods for treating skin.

He has held solo exhibitions in various places including Sapporo and Kobe. In 1996, he created a relief painting at Niimi River Park. In 2013, he participated in a special equipment stand reproduction project. His ceramic seal is designed with his initial "K".

Sueishi Kouzan 末石高仙 (すえいし　こうせん)

Takashi is his real name. Born in Fukuda, Bizen City. Graduated from the Seto Agricultural School. After studying under Fujiwara Rakuzan and learning pottery techniques for ten years, he built his first kiln in 1972. Selected for the East China Branch Exhibition of Japan Kogei Association and the Prefectural Exhibition. Focuses on vases with scorched surface coloring.

Norimatsu Shunkou 乗松俊行
1923-2010

Born in Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture. Graduated from the Kawabata Institute of Western painting and the Japan Art School. Studied under the sculptors Ogura Ichiro and Kiyomizu Rokubey at the Ehime Prefectural Toibe Pottery Works, then apprenticed in Bizen in 1958. Built the kiln in 1967. Won prizes at the Japan Traditional Craft Exhibition, the East China Branch Exhibition, and others. Awarded the Sanyo Housou Award. Bizen Mayor’s Award, etc. Solo exhibitions at Osaka Hanshin, Hiroshima Mitsukoshi, Ginza Kuroda Toen, Ikebukuro Seibu, Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi, Ginza Matsuya, and others. Regular member of the Japan Kogei association.

History A pottery studio opened by the eldest son Yuichi and his wife at the suggestion of Living National Treasure Yamamoto Toshu. They produce a wide range of items including tea utensils, sake utensils, flower vases, miscellaneous items, nameplates, and hand washing bowls. They are characterized by their clear shafts, and their pottery is modeled after the works of Toshu and Yuichi. They also focus on original works, and in 2007 they partnered with nameplate manufacturers across the country to produce Bizen ware nameplates. The large exhibition hall displays approximately 20,000 works by potters and artists, and new works are released every year. In the future, they hope to preserve Toshu's works and pass them on to future generations, while creating pottery that is in line with the times. They are also actively developing works in collaboration with other industries. There are three climbing kilns, one gas kiln, and two electric kilns. Founded in 1974 by Yamamoto Yuichi and his wife.
