Subject: 19" tall gourd-shaped (hyotan) Tamba-yaki sake bottle, wrapped in indigo-dyed rope. It had a collection label with it that said as much (Tamba sake bottle), but it must have fallen off while I was carrying it out... Note that it has four sea-shell impressions on the side from the firing.
Both bottles came from the same estate. The dealer I got them from said the original owner had made it his goal to visit all the old Japanese kiln towns, and apparently he had a large collection of Japanese ceramics. This dealer said that he was the first to pick at the estate after LACMA, the USC Pacific Asia Museum, and someone from Christies.
